Glatfelter Furthers Initiative to Support Permanent Books
York, PA – May 26, 2010 – Glatfelter, a global supplier of specialty paper and engineered products, has enhanced Permanence Matters, an initiative aimed at preserving printed books and the quality of the paper on which they are printed.
“The purpose of the spoken word is to convey meaning. The purpose of the written word is to memorialize meaning. Can you imagine how our world would be changed without meaning being memorialized by the written word? No Bible or Koran. No Gettysburg Address. No Catcher in the Rye. No way to capture and sustain the great ideas, perspectives and whimsy of mankind,” said George H. Glatfelter, CEO.
Due to the rising popularity of digital readers and the increasing use of quicker to deteriorate groundwood paper in the publishing industry, it is crucial to focus on the importance of quality printed books. The written word is meaningful no matter what the subject, and the words should be preserved forever.
The digital movement is a positive development for the printing industry, helping to spread the written word. With Permanence Matters, Glatfelter will be communicating their message by connecting with all lovers of books allowing them to join the cause to preserve the quality of printed books, and digital books printed on demand.
This initiative will also educate the public about the threat groundwood paper brings to the industry. While historically, lower-quality groundwood papers have been relegated to mass-market paperback books only, publishers today are using groundwood papers in first-printings of many hardcover books, including many bestsellers. An estimated 50% of titles on The New York Times bestseller list are currently printed on groundwood paper.
To help in its call to action, and to better serve the thousands of readers who have expressed concern about the potential deterioration of books, Permanence Matters has developed www.PermanenceMatters.com, a new website detailing the issue and providing interested individuals who support the cause with tools to take proper action to raise awareness of this important topic.
Additionally, a multi-platform Social Media campaign has been developed, allowing like-minded passionate book lovers the opportunity to share their thoughts, spread the word within the reading and publishing community, and make certain that America is aware of this all-important initiative.
In an effort to reach as many people within the book community as possible, Permanence Matters will be exhibiting at Book Expo America 2010, North America’s premier publishing event, in New York, May 26 – May 27. The initiative’s presence at the expo will help raise awareness with a variety of constituencies, including librarians, authors, literary agencies, booksellers, and all other concerned parties, because Permanence Matters.
