ANSI Standards

ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R2002)

American National Standards Institute "Permanence of Paper for Publications and Document in Libraries & Archives" document includes:

  • Less than 1% lignin by weight
  • pH minimum of 7.5
  • Folding Endurance
  • Tear Strength
  • Alkaline Reserve

The ANSI standard clearly states that a product must have less than 1% lignin by weight to be considered permanent. Books printed on groundwood paper contain MUCH more than 1% lignin content—sometimes up to 10%--so any book that is published on groundwood paper does not meet this standard for permanence. Your book will NOT stand the test of time.
